Beating a Dead Horse: A Visual Comparison of the Racially Confused Casting in "The Last Airbender"

Much ado has been made about the casting of white actors in the upcoming film adaptation of the Nickelodeon TV show, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Having already discussed the topic at length several times on the /Filmcast (most recently on the last After Dark, which should be available for your listening pleasure this Sunday, Feb 21), I have no interest in repeating myself, especially not when there are so many other articles that have summarized the issue more eloquently than I could ever hope to.

I would, however, like to cast further perspective on the situation, via a visual comparison of the actors side-by-side with their animated counterparts.

To start, here is Sokka and Zuko.

Dev Patel as Sokka

Jackson Rathbone as Zuko

Note each actor's incredible likeness to the character. If strictly gauging similarities in appearance, this can be deemed a successful casting job–or at least that would be true, were the actors actually playing those characters. Instead, Sokka is being played by Jackson Rathbone, and Zuko by Dev Patel.

Here's a different comparison, this time factoring in Katara. And also: reality.

Notice anything?

I'll refrain from voicing an opinion on the matter. You can draw your own conclusions.

Don't be naive Jaewoo, Consideration for a role is by acting and feel for the character. If M Night thought Patel worked better as Zuko, who are you to say otherwise? Did you attend the casting sessions? Just because someone is of the same 'race' doesn't make them a better choice.

I can clearly see how wrong this is, but I'm too worn out from getting upset by similar types of casting in Hollywood movies that I just can't bring myself to care anymore. I think our society has reached a point where public outrage and condemnation is pretty much stale and useless and the offenders have now realized it. So they've put less caution in their efforts to expoit things and just do it openly, while sitting back, weathering the verbal backlash and raking in the dough. It used to be annoying, now it's just depressing.

Sorry, but Jackson as Zuko is just as much fail as Jackson as Sokka. Jackson really has no place in this movie unless he wants to play an extra. I'm willing to accept Dev as Sokka, but really, they should just stick to Native American actors for the Water Tribe characters. But yeah, Jackson has no place playing Zuko just like Jesse McCartney has no place playing Zuko. An East Asian actor would be nice.

This was the first thing I noticed after watching the second trailer. I was pissed. I find that the skin tone of the characters in the original cartoon plays a vital role in the feel of the story. The white complection of the fire nation characters, such as zuko, and azula (who unfortunately isn't in the movie) relates to the world's history of white superiority, like Hitler's Nazi Party and British colonization. It is through our world's historical background in which a more mature audience would subliminally grasp a sinister feel from the fire nation. Shamilan must have felt the need to make the good characters white kids since the movie may appeal to a younger audience. Kids are used to seeing the good guys as beautiful white people, like in the Forbidden Kingdom (horrible), Lightning Theif, Snow white (and pretty much all of Disney's princess movies), which reminds me of iCarly, Wizards of weaverly place, etc. Avatar was the only good show the played on Nickelodeon. I'm very disappointed

Never got a "white" vibe from the Fire Nation and Iroh (voiced by Mako) certainly didn't come across as "white". George Takai did the voice for another Fire Nation character. Given that most of the cultures and names were fairly heavily Asian influenced, culturally people should be seeing them all as Asians. Of course a lot of the behavior in every part of the series was also modeled on American children and pop culture (one can also take a look at the list of voice actors) so maybe they're all really Americans. Or maybe people are just seeing what they want to see in various characters, which don't really fit neatly into pigeonholes? As for the Water Tribe definitely being non-white, yes their skin complexion was dark but they are also shown with blue eyes? How many non-whites have blue eyes?

That's one way of looking at the Fire Nation, but actually the Avatar: The Last Airbender show bible referred to the Fire Nation as the "imperial side of Asia" like Imperial Japan. Which would make even more sense with the similarities right down to the appearance of the Fire Nation/Japanese island. And I believe the pale complexion of the royal family was meant to invoke the Japanese (indeed, generally East Asian) convention of a pale complexion signifying high class/royalty.

In real life, non-white people also have blue, green and lilac coloured eyes. Eskimos in Alaska also have members with blue eyes and blond hair. They are not descended from Europeans. Except that in the Avatar universe, eye color corresponds to the mystical element the character controls. Blue for water, gray for air, green/brown for earth, and red/gold for fire. So now do casting directors have to look at the color of someone's skin when casting roles? We can't have any black actor portray a bad guy and we can't have a white actor play the good guy. That was an astonishing display of ignorance. The characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender have specific cultural backgrounds, all of which were heavily researched to help build a more authentic & interesting mythology for the show. To cast blatantly Caucasion actors as Inuit is disrespectful to that culture.

Blade and Spawn come to mind. Do you honestly think either live action movies would have been able to get away with having those roles replaced with white actors? I'm African-American and believe you me that there would be just as much of an uproar if those movies were released with Caucasian "replacements". Obviously culture, race and the difficulty we have still with this issue remains. Just look at the discussions about (the other) Avatar. The difference is that today, there are people of color who speak out against the Western, Caucasian cultural bias that tries to "reinterpret" everything when there's significant money involved (live action movie). People of color have been silent for a long time. Now that we're bringing attention to things like this we "racist" and are supposed to "just forget about it". Uh, no.

Yes, people do care. It's an insult to the series, and the mythology of the culture, to have such blatantly whitewashed characters cast as good guys. The actors look nothing like the cartoon characters drawn into the show. This really is just a move to appeal to the little white kids whose parents are going to buy the movie for them. Hey everyone, i just want to point out the fact that we have only seen TRAILERS. Yes some of the main characters are portrayed by actors not of the same ethnic backgorunds as those of the series, but we have not seen all of the characters who will be seen in the film. Maybe there are more asian and native american actors to be seen down the road.So please stop ranting because Katara and Sokka are caucasian, and Dev Patel is Indian, THAT COUNTS AS ASIAN....And one more thing, if the movie is a success at the box office, there will be two more films. The next film would take place in the Earth Kingdom and i guarantee there will be more actors of east asian descent for the major roles. I don't know whether this is a case of racism or not, but I am pretty sure that it is at least disrispectful to the original story to make such changes. I mean, what would people think if they had casted an indian harry potter for the movies? To me an indian harry potter would be just as ridiculous as the blond Sokka is. It's not like it is wrong to use a black or an indian actor for certain roles but it just isn't right to make unjustified major transformations to the original characters. The race of the characters is not really clear on the original series, but their skin color IS. So I don't care if they use an indian Katara or a black Katara or a latino Katara, all I really want is to see a Katara that has got darker skin and blue eyes. It's a fantasy genre, who cares if she has to wear blue contacts? Plus, given the really bad movies Shyamalan has recently made, I don't think anyone should be trusting his creative judgement to make such changes just yet...

I sure do hope that this film will fail so bad there wont be a sequel, A:TLA was better off a cartoon point blank. Hollywood should start using their brains and not making adaptation after adaptation after remake!!!! We've seen it all before, we need more originality not this recycling crap. The best way, is for the directors to come up with their own original scripts, no one will care what race the protagonists are since it's purely their own creation. For all they like they can make as many white protagonists as they want, people will watch them without a fuss!!! But if you want a bit more diversity support foreign movies as well and don't just whine about Hollywood being white centric. The problem with people these days is that they are lazy, I mean just hearing the word foreign to them means don't bother watching for you cannot relate to culture. I'm an African, I watch Hollywood films, and though i'm not american, I enjoy them and don't necessarily have to relate to them, but watch them for a better understanding of the outside world. I also watch Asian films when I get the chance, even with subtitles, being open minded is the key to real diversity!!! It's a big world out there beyond your own country, state, city and suburb. Nothing revolves around America nor any other small chunk of land floating on the massive oceans. At least nothing should anyways. In order to be able to relate to a culture that isn't like your own, all you have to do is be open minded, give it a chance!!! Just don't think and let the story unfold in front of you. You don't even have to be an expert of the culture, the media itself tells you what's what. No need to Americanize it, DBZ was a successful Japanese anime, it was pointless making a live action of it, let alone making a Caucasian Goku! You'll find the same case with A:TLA though its obviously not an anime but an american cartoon influenced by the foreign genre and Asian cultures and mythology. If Hollywood starts seeing that all of a sudden foreign films are doing really well in America and worldwide, they'll get the point loud and clear and a more diverse Hollywood archives will begin(and hopefully more fruitful ones too).

... I didn't see the movie yet and today is the first I even decided to check out who was casted. I saw previews on TV and it didn't look too bad... I do have to agree though that if you were a follower of the cartoon series you would know that it's a very heavily cultural story... what do you think "avatar" means? As far as racism I definitely agree that an attempt to cast the characters with people who are actually of the culture they are supposed to be in the cartoon would have been most appropriate... but because they were not does not by any means intend racism... Casting surely has to display some likeness, but ultimately it comes down to acting ability... and trying to link racism to the eye colors of the characters is just really silly because many mentioned before... their eye color is based on their element.

Honestly- I liked who they casted for the movie. Its not always about who looks exactly like the character but who could can play the role the best. I watched the movie and I was a big fan of the show and I thought they played the characters quite well. M. Night also stayed with all the costumes and scenery that was in the cartoon.
