Before The Matrix, there was Dark City, a sci-fi film that dealt with a similar storyline sans the kung fu and 'splosions. Directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow), the film won many hearts, including Roger Ebert, who gave the film a four-star review, re-reviewed it in his Great Films collection, and even recorded a commentary track on the original DVD. Now that's dedication.
Personally, I consider Dark City one of the greatest films of the nineties, and the fact that it never saw much success beyond a small cult following has always been heartbreaking to me. Now audiences will have a chance to revisit the film again in a newly announced directors cut release on DVD and Blu-ray. Both will sport the awesome cover above and will street on July 29. This cut adds 15 minutes to the film, bringing the total running time to 111 minutes.
While I'm certainly glad to see this directors cut finally released, I really think it needs the sort of publicity that the recent Blade Runner release saw. This film simply needs to be shown in theaters again because it's exactly the sort of thing the indie-crowd would eat up.
