Is $150 Million Enough To Replicate The Success of "Iron Man" for DC's "Green Lantern"?

Green Lantern - Comic
There seems to be some mixed feelings in the air surrounding The Green Lantern and whether it can be a success. I definitely have my own doubts on the subject. After all, it is one of the lesser known heroes of the DC universe, with an even lesser known origin story. But weren't we at this same point regarding a comic book adaptation around a year and a half ago in regards to Iron Man? Questioning whether Jon Favreau could actually mold an action movie and origin story into something good using around $140 million or so? Waiting in anticipation for a cast and then laying even more doubt on the Robert Downey, Jr. option? And most of all, some of us were wondering if the world cared enough to see an Iron Man movie in the first place. Right?

Well here we are again, only it's not in Marvel's playground. Here we have another semi-recognizable comic book adaptation being made from the DC Comics workshop using a similar budget. Pre-production begins July at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney with a reported budget of $150 million. Is this enough though for an effects laden film? Iron Man may have been deceptively easier on the CGI strain than most films of its ilk do to the mechanics of having an entirely enclosed human being. For a film like Green Lantern there's going to be much more work in terms of creating a seamless transition between practical and computer generated effects. In regards to story quality I have complete faith in Warner Bros., having been behind the wildly successful Batman franchise reboots which had similar budgets at $150 million (Batman Begins) and $185 million (The Dark Knight).

This is a good opportunity for DC to get another solid superhero film out and capitalize on any shortcomings Marvel's line of films have had. There's plenty of room for improvement on many of them, although Spider-Man and Iron Man leave a very small margin of error in both the quality of writing and film direction (as well as a solid supporting cast). Rumors speculate that Chris Pine is in line for the title role as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. Perhaps we'll know more after the U.S. release of Star Trek, in which he fills the shoes of James T Kirk. I'm certainly a tad excited to see what DC can do to begin to catch up to Marvel's plethora of film adaptations. But where as some of their moves might have been deemed too hasty, I think DC can afford to take the time to ensure quality over quantity.

I reckon this movie could be

I think this movie could be really good, even though Green Lantern isn't as cool a superhero as Iron Man...Warner Bro's did a great job with Batman and Watchmen. My only complaint is that Sydney get's Green Lantern...in Melbourne, we get Ghost Rider

I admit, GL is not as famous

I admit, GL is not as famous as Superman or Batman, but I wouldn't say he is one of the "lesser known heroes." He is way better known than most of the Marvel properties that have been turned into movies, and he is one of DC's hottest comic book sellers right now. I would put him on par with the Flash and slightly ahead of the Green Arrow with recognizability. The other nice thing for Warners is that most of the main Justice Leaguers already have recognizable logos. He has had a ton of exposure over the years, just not in live action. In context

You're right I may have been too hard on his fame but in my mind a quick way to judge a superhero's recognizablility is to ask yourself what percentage of people would have enough knowledge on the character to name his/her alter ego. They're quick to throw out Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne or Peter Parker. But most I would think are not going to throw out a Hal Jordan or Barry Allen or Oliver Queen (thanks Smallville), they might recognize the name or the symbol but as far as important details, those are going to come up short.

I do agree that the name Hal

I do agree that the name Hal Jordan may not be on the tip of many people's tongues, coupled with the fact that there are multiple Green Lanterns. My wife, who has endured my indulgence of superhero cartoons, was surprised to see a non-black Green Lantern thanks to the Justice League cartoon. But now that I think about it, I am not sure how many people know who Diana Prince is but Wonder Woman is a household name. Lets just hope this movie makes GL a household name. :)

Green Lantern to Superman

I'm excited for this movie, because it at least indicates WB is getting off their asses and doing something with their material. Marvel has killed in movies, producing great ones like X-men, Spiderman 2, Iron man, as well as bad ones, like The Hulk, Ghost Rider (yuk), and Fantastic Four 2, spiderman 3. DC has made Superman Returns (good, not as good as it should have been), Watchmen (not available to general audience, but i loved it), and two fantastic Batman movies. It seems DC lets their setbacks really hold them back more than Marvell has, but it shouldn't. Iron Man showed we can make obscure heroes great, I think Green Lantern could do the same for DC. If it does well, I hope DC starts fast-tracking other heroes: Green Arrow, Wonderwoman, Flash, and especially a new Superman. I agree with the margin of error being very small. But this is true with most heroes, I think, it's just more tedious with the lesser known ones. I have high hopes for this though, so I"m excited.

Green Light for Green Lantern..way to go!

Been waiting for this comic hero be on film since spiderman 1,i like him more than the other super heroes, finally it's being done...hope Aquaman follows suit..and if I'm not mistaken a Justice League movie is in the works...Good luck!
