While yet another bone has been thrown our way regarding Ghostbusters 3–-which is, not only will there be new Busters, but perhaps a whole "academy" of them–-it appears we forgot to stop and ask ourselves, "Wait, so this is really happening?!"
The notorious teasing around this film has almost completely gone from "Will it get made?" to "What will it be about?" But with the confirmation from Sony as well as the hints coming from Aykroyd and Ramis, it's hard to pay no heed.
In this latest Ghostbusters tease, Dan Aykroyd revealed to MTV...
They'll be lots of cadets, boys and girls...a whole new generation that has to be trained...led by an individual who you'll all love when you meet him, but I'm not going to tell you anything yet.
Seems like he's told us quite a bit already. And he certainly conjures up fond hopes of who it may be that we'll "all love".
Akyroyd also promises new gadgets, like the 'neuron splitter', used to "flip from dimension to dimension." Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky may be writing the screenplay, but it sounds like our original head writers certainly have some ideas of their own.
And while "there [still] is no Dana", Harold Ramis still insists that everyone from the original film "said they'd do it." (I'm not holding my breath for Rick Moranis, who chose to retire from movies in the late '90s.)
So is this really happening? Well, it's gone far beyond rumor now, and if we hadn't been teased with it for the past ten or fifteen years, I'd feel a little better. Of course we all need to take into consideration that a video game, action figures, and a The Real Ghostbusters DVD release is either here or on its way. For a new installment of the series to hit theaters in, say, 2010, it would not only be successful, but would "really bust some heads!" ...in a cultural sense, of course.
While films like Transformers and The Dark Knight already had some built-in nostalgia, these films didn't emanate as directly from there respective places of origin quite the way this film will. I mean, imagine Ray Parker's theme filling a theater over some new, unforeseen "3" logo. For the 20-30 somethings, it should strike a chord that hasn't been plucked since we dreamed of sporting our own Proton Pack (and I think those dreams have yet to truly dissipate). However, it's obviously much more than that; it has to be. This kind of anticipation doesn't generate from a 'part 3' of a 25 year old kids' movie; it generates from a timeless comedy (not to mention a legitimate horror flick) with the mentality (and alumni) of the golden days of SNL, that also happens to appeal to youths in a massive way. Quite simply, bustin' makes us all feel good!
