New "Watchmen" Footage and Teaser Poster!

Watchmen - Smiley

Zack Snyder showed up (along with a few cast members) for the Spike TV 2008 Scream Awards last night, premiering an exclusive extended trailer for Watchmen. In essence it's very similar to the original trailer, still using that same "The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning" song by The Smashing Pumpkins. It also includes some shots that were shown in the montage of footage premiered at Comic-Con this past summer.

Highlights include: our first look at Veidt’s Antarctic fortress Karnak, Dr. Manhattan disassembling an army tank in seconds, Laurie and Dan doing the nasty, Rorschach being totally badass (leaping from a window, using a grappling hook, etc.), Nite Owll II and Silk Spectre II kissing in slo-mo as a mushroom cloud appears in the distance, and my personal favorite, an extended look at Comedian being thrown from the window (the scene that kicks the entire story into gear).

The more I see from this film, the more I realize how amazing it's going to be. I've heard so much bitching recently about the changed ending, but I can almost guarantee that these issues will be put to rest as soon as the film hits theaters and people start walking out of their screenings carrying their dropped jaws in their arms.

The only thing that worries me is the lack of dialogue we've seen. I'm usually pretty good at gauging the quality of a trailer's editing versus the quality of the footage used in the trailer, and the fact that we haven't heard any real dialogue is making it a little hard to judge how the film will be. However, visually, at least 95% of the footage shown so far appears to taken directly from the comic, so I'm not at all worried. We have a cast of very talented actors at work; I'm sure they'll do a solid job.

UPDATE: We've seen a ton of Watchmen character posters already, but now we have a new official teaser poster for the film.

Looks amazing. I really hope that if/when this movie becomes a huge mainstream success, people start recognizing that bloodied smiley button as an iconic symbol of the Watchmen universe. That way when I wear my Watchmen shirt, people will stop asking me if I'm a big fan of Carl's Jr.
