Red Band Trailer for "Jennifer's Body": It's Like "Juno", If "Juno" Was About a Monster That Ate People

Jennifer's Body - Header

You have to give props where they're due. Regardless of how you may feel about Diablo Cody as a person and a writer, let it never be said that she isn't willing to try new things. First it was the leap from film (Juno) to TV (United States of Tara), which wasn't so much of a stylistic change as it was a narrative one, but now she's tackling something much, much different...

Horror.

If there was ever a greater change of pace for an up-and-coming screenwriter than going from a hip indie crowd-pleaser to a gruesome & gory R-rated monster flick, I have yet to discover it.

And yet, somehow, that change of pace seems to suit her completely. The overly scripted "hip lingo" characters exchanged in Juno bothered the hell out of me, but that was largely due to the film already sporting an aggressively indie style. But in a genre that rarely has strong dialogue to begin with, her flair for "witty" wordplay is nothing short of refreshing.

Just about every line of dialogue featured in this red band trailer (which is apparently a much more honest portrayal of what the film is like than the green band trailer) probably would've made me cringe or roll my eyes had I heard it in Juno. And for good reason. They almost read more like a parody of Diablo Cody's writing style than actual dialogue you'd expect her to write...

"You need a manny bad. You should find a Chinese chick to buff your situation."

"Nice hardware, ace."

"They're agents of Satan, with really awesome haircuts."

Anybody else get a sudden case of deja vu? I could've sworn I actually did hear these lines in Juno, and I could've sworn I did cringe. No matter. What matters is, this time around, this type of dialogue works. It plays so much better against the winking, B-movie sensibilities of a horror flick than it does a character-driven indie dramedy. Maybe if Juno had Ellen Page eating people to help feed her hellspawn baby, that film would've appealed more to me too.
