It's hard being a R-rated sex comedy when you don't have Judd Apatow's name to ensure your success. Audiences instinctively assume the film's going to suck. This is understandable, considering that most R-rated sex comedies that don't have Judd Apatow's name attached do, in fact, suck. So it should come as no surprise that my expectations were minimal upon seeing a press screening for Sex Drive a few weeks back. But lo and behold, the movie was funny. I mean really funny. It's certainly no Superbad, and won't go down as a classic staple of the teen comedy genre, but it's definitely hilarious enough to justify the unescapable marketing campaign that's blatantly trying to shove the film down our throats. It's clear that the film's studio wants this to be the next big sleeper hit.
The latest addition to Sex Drive's endless online promotion is actually something worth noting: the first 10 minutes of the film have been released for your viewing pleasure. If you weren't entirely convinced before, hopefully you will be after watching this.
It's impossible to watch Sex Drive's opening scene without immediately having flashbacks of American Pie, which is entirely warranted given that this film feels like a combination of that film and the '80s John Cusack pic The Sure Thing. Please note though, there are far more memorable scenes as the movie goes on, and the entire third act resolution is handled beautifully. So even if you're not 100% on board by these first ten minutes, don't use that as a reason to pass on the rest of the film. It truly is as hilarious as early buzz has indicated, and for my money one of 2008's funniest films. I currently have it tied with Ghost Town for biggest surprise of the year.
