Earlier today, when posting on the trailer for The Haunting in Connecticut, I discussed the lack of originality in today's horror films. Now we have the trailer for the family comedy 17 Again, proving just how unoriginal movies can really get. In a nutshell, the film is about Matthew Perry transforming into Zac Efron. So in other words, it's about an annoying actor turning into an even more annoying one. More specifically though, the film's about a family man who magically reverts to his 17-year-old self. Oh, the wackiness that is sure to ensue!
What is Hollywood's obsession with age/body swap family comedies? Big already handled the concept beautifully 20 years ago. Isn't that enough? Do we really have to retread the same idea over and over again until every possible variation has been covered?
Seriously, just look at all the family films that have covered the age/body swapping genre: 13 Going on 30 (a girl turns into her older self), Freaky Friday (a mom and daughter switch bodies), 18 Again! (an old guy turns into his younger self - and wow, even the title is pretty much the same), Vice Versa (a father and son switch bodies), Like Father, Like Son (a father and son switch bodies), Dream a Little Dream (an elderly man and teen switch bodies), Young Again (a man becomes his younger self...who's 17 - same exact storyline as 17 Again), It's a Boy Girl Thing (a girl and boy switch bodies), A Saintly Switch (a husband and wife switch bodies), and probably dozens more that I can't be bothered with finding.
You can also watch the trailer in HD at AOL.
Enough is enough people. Every single one of these movies is the same.
"LOL, that older guy is now a kid so he doesn't know how to be hip!"
Or, "ROFL, that kid is now an adult so he's totally innocent and naive yet also hilariously innapropriate!"
Just think, the wacky observations that can be made about the differences between teens and adults are limitless! What other untapped genius can be milked from such a premise? Maybe a white guy can become a black guy! Can you imagine the hilarity? Talk about a culture clash of positively wacky proportions! Or how about a little girl turning into an old creepy pedophile!? Or better yet, reverse it: an old creepy pedophile turns into a little girl! Gold. Pure gold. I'm a genius.
