I'm not sure how Fox managed it, but they've secured a very strong lineup next season with two new television series by Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams. It's somewhat shocking that Whedon is back with Fox at all, but I'm assuming he's still under contract and had no choice. Since the idiot executives who cancelled Firefly seem to be gone, he may have better luck this time as well. Fox was also wise to grab Abrams, who has crafted two insanely popular series (Alias and Lost) for ABC.
Whedon's series, Dollhouse, stars Eliza Dushku as a young woman who works for an organization that wipes the minds of their workers before sending them off on a variety of missions. In the trailer Dushku's character Echo gets programmed as both an assassin and some jealous ex-husband's dinner date -- which makes me think the series may share the unique combination of action, character, and hilarity beloved by Whedon fans.
Fringe from J.J. Abrams continues his tradition of science fiction shows, although this one aims to be more paranormal than his previous works. Honestly this thing could have easily been sold as an X-Files spinoff, although judging from the trailer it looks to be far more action-packed. Plus, the always dependable Lance Reddick is a prominent cast member -- that's certainly a great sign.
Dollhouse will air Mondays at 8pm preceding 24 this fall, and Fringe will follow House Tuesdays at 9pm.
