In a bizarre move (not that I'd expect anything less from a Spike Jonze production), our first real look at the 'Wild Things' of Where the Wild Things Are can be found on... a series of skateboards.
On the one hand, this makes complete sense, since they're coming from Girl Skateboards Company, which Jonze co-founded. (As some may be already aware, Jonze is an avid skateboarder, and shot many skate videos back in the day.)
So, yeah, that much I understand.
What I don't get though, is why the hell we're seeing skateboard designs featuring the creatures before any official pics with them. Is this is an issue of somebody jumping the gun in making the images available, or just a lazy marketing campaign?
Whatever the case, I'm just glad to finally be seeing them, because they look terrific. I'm a huge advocate of practical effects over CGI, so it's nice to see such artistic creations being brought to life in this way. For adults anyway. I expect kids will probably empty their bowels at the mere sight of these beasts. And is it just me, or does the fact that the creatures aren't even made to look frightening just up the creepiness factor that much more?
And for those who are interested in how the live action creations compare to author Maurice Sendak's artwork renditions, I've made up this side-by-side look to help give you an idea.
