REVIEW: Friday the 13th

After my first few attempts to properly plumb the depths of producer Michael Bay's latest horror remake failed, I quickly realized that a simple written review was far too restricting. There was only so much I could convey with words when it came to the subtle intricacies of this rather brilliant reinvention of the slasher genre. A video review was the only logical option.

REVIEW: The Unborn

The Unbored...

My mother always taught me that if you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all. This is all well and good in theory, but in practice, attempting to follow this principle can prove to be quite the challenge. Such is the case when you're tasked with reviewing a movie like The Unborn.

But what fun would life be without a challenge?

Give it up for Robert Downey Jr. and director Jon Favreau, the two most unexpected talents to take hold of the comic book movie genre and make it their bitch. And believe me when I say, I mean that in the best way possible.

The Bank Job

Overly familiar though it may be, the gritty and fun-filled caper flick The Bank Job is a welcome escape from the seemingly endless array of trash that's been delivered thus far by the early 2008 movie season. It's not necessarily the most memorable or spectacular of affairs, but it's packed with enough amusing characters and old school appeal to warrant, if not a trip to the cinema, at least a rental.

Vantage Point

Vantage Point, the latest film in the hey-we're-just-gonna-fuck-you- around-for-90-minutes-instead-of-worrying-about-trivial-stuff-like-story genre, is a movie so inept, it's unable to even deliver on its very straightforward gimmick: to show its events from varying vantage points (in this case, an assassination attempt on the President). It's an admittedly cool device to progress a story, or at least it would be were it serving any actual purpose to the plot.

As much as I'd love to tell you that Hollywood's seasonal crapfest—dubbed the "dump months"—has officially ended with JUMPER, the disappointment continues with this middling action sci-fi pic that's, putting it nicely, kind of a mess, and in more harsh terms, a complete fucking snoozefest.
